OK im research this subject heavy for 6 months on and off. Bottom line Dogs and Humans are different...a Dog stomach acid is allot strong than human, hmmm wonder why they eat raw dead animals in the wild and are perfectly fine. BUt yes they are wild they a big chance of getting disease from a bite but not from eating meat the dog digestive system moves so fast along with the strong stomach acid there is no way for bacteria or disease to spread. it kills it instantly. Now you wonder why when u take ur dog to vet they may say its the food thats made them sick (Dog Food) of course it is...we don't eat dog food do we? no...you know whats really in dog food? do you know if the vet that ok are even reputable Vets...Dog food = A diet that contains poor-quality meats, additives, and other ingredients dogs should not ingest.. so my question is why do u believe raw diet is bad for dogs? now u heard this...and feel free my friends Google "Barf's Diet", Let me know what u think, of what u read!

I feed a combination of raw and california natural to my dogs.. They've never so much as gotten diarrhea from it.
Dogs have only been eating dog food for about 40 years.. Before that, they ate raw meat from the butcher and table scraps. In other words, they've only been eating kibble for a few generations of dogs. They are not far removed from eating raw.
If anything, they are not yet accustomed to corn-based kibble which they have only been being fed for about 40 years.. That's why you are seeing so many allergies and other problems because people are feeding their pets an inappropriate diet.

I am completely FOR raw, and I have been feeding my dogs raw for about half a year now. My parents switched their dogs to raw not long after I did. One of their dogs is a senior at 10 years old. He did a complete 180 in terms of health. He used to be lazy, sluggish, never played anymore, and had a bad case of gingivitis and gum disease. His health was deteriorating...fast. After he was switched to raw, his mouth got MUCH better. His teeth are white and his breath is fresh. His gums have not bled since as well. He is now full of energy and plays like a puppy again.
I do agree that raw is not for every dog. Most dogs with IBD and other intestinal diseases or weak immune systems cannot handle raw.
And sorry to those that believe that dogs evolved in the years of dogs becoming domesticated, but they haven't. You can't change a digestive system by feeding one thing for a bit of time. That's like saying I can digest rocks if I begin to make a meal out of them daily. Dogs are carnivores and always will be. Today's domestic dogs are so close to the wild candid that their genetic make up is 99.9% the same. They CAN handle the same diet as a wild candid and thrive on it. The only reason grains and all that junk is in commercial dog food is to add fillers so the dog doesn't go hungry and have something in their belly along with being able make a food with as little money put in it as possible. Ever pay attention to that LONG list of vitamins and minerals in commercial dog food? That's because everything else that is in it is crap and has no nutritional benefit what so ever from being cooked down to nothing. Now when you feed raw, they are getting all the nutrients from the meat because it is not cooked or rendered in any way.
Adding veggies is an option when feeding raw, but it's not entirely needed. As long as you know what you are doing and what to feed, then feeding all meat and no veggies is perfectly safe. But, it has to consist of organs, meat and bone and variety is the key. I'm not against feeding veggies when feeding raw, I just don't see the need for them.

I only follow the barf diet. I too have done much research and am going on to study canine nutrition/natropathy next year full time because Ive been so inspired by the many healing facets of raw food. I even give my dog old meat and hes fine, so much bull going on about canine nutrition, when I read what vets tell people to feed their dogs i think what a load of.....
Add on; I totally agree with the store brought answer by greekman also. My meat comes from a local butcher, all free range, hormone and steroid free etc, all my vegie scraps I save for my dog are organic!!!

I know there are people who believe that raw feed will kill your dog, or severely shorten it's life span, but I don't see any of them responding here. That's fine. They often are flamers....
What I don't like is the name "Barf Diet"... it sounds like the dog will throw up because of eating this.
I do a partial raw... raw breakfast... kibble supper... and that gives my dogs the nutrients.
I disagree with comments which imply that wild dogs eat carrion. They do eat animals that have died, but not once they turn to carrion which is when they are old and rotting. Some birds eat carrion, which is why they are bald headed.
One thing that I learned about raw feeding that makes people more comfortable is that, anything that might bother a dog in spite of it's strong stomach acid can be killed by freezing the meat before feeding it. If you freeze and then defrost meat, the germs that might bother your dog will be killed by the freezing.
One other good thought... for dogs with irritable bowels, you apparently can ease that problem by feeding them what's called Green Tripe. Apparently this settles the stomach, and I know at least one dog who can NOW eat raw because he has GT in his diet.

It is fine to let the dogs eat raw as long as you do it right. I work at a veterinary hospital and some vets say raw is good and others say raw is bad. You talk to 10 different vets and you get 10 different answers. The only time that it could be bad is if they have a food allergy or IBD. You also need to add veggies and things like that because dogs are not strictly carnivores they are omnivores.

While I feed Canidae, I have no problem with the BARF diet, except--have you ever wondered where the meat you are feeding your dog came from? If you are feeding it the same quality crap the humans eat from the grocery store, then you are feeding it meat full of hormones, steroids and preservatives.. Think about that first.
Fully 60% of food in the grocery store is worse then dog s h i t
I have to have some faith in the multi-million dollar factory that produces my dog food so long as I feed the best I can afford.
Hope I helped!!

quote
"Dogs are carnivores. They need to eat meat"
Dogs are omnivores
Because a dog has the ability to at least survive on an all vegetable diet it can not be a carnivore.
Dogs just like most animals that predate for a living are opportunists and their proper diet consists of anything and every thing (just not always the same thing). This is part of why I just smile at those that think they are doing their dog some kind of favor by feeding them all these fancy foods that have been so popular lately.

Biologically Appropriate Raw Foods! I am all for it. Dogs are carnivores. They need to eat meat. Dog food is made from corn meal and restaraunt grease. There are alot of dogs that cannot deal with it. I know some of the dog breeders that are raising racing greyhounds feed them raw meat along with fruits and veggies.

My dogs and cats have always done fine on a high quality dog or cat food. So I feel no need to switch to a raw diet.
They also say due to evolution and dogs and cats eating man made foods for so long, that their digestive systems aren't really meant to handle a raw food diet anymore. I've never really researched raw diets, so I can not say whether or not it's true.
I think it's fine to feed your pet whatever you think is best for them as long as it's nutritious.

no i have not done lots of research but i think raw food may be bad for dogs becuase they have come a long way from their wolf ancestors. their digestive system may be able to handle meat but not to the degree of a wolf. small clean chunks should work but if a dog eats a rabbit it just brought down there are several issues (hygiene) ect, depending on the amount and type of raw meat you use effects the dog. You also should add vegetables to the diet becuase dogs are not carnivorous they are omnivores.
