alright...from a previous experience. My very first bike was a Wal Mart bike, much like the ones you see out there...with the rear shock and all that junk. DON'T BUY ONE
i took it off roading and it needed constant maintenance on different parts each time. It had a lot of weak points and i even found a design flaw on mine (a hole that let water into the BB)
If you're on a budget, i highly reccomed a bike with no rear suspension. I know it's hard to get over the looks, but trust me it's worth it. All that rear shock does is add weight and give you problems. The frame might look nice but it weighs a ton...even if it was made out of aluminum
you can check the bicycle shops and i think they might have something for you. I think i've seen some Treks on that price range. I know someone who paid $200 for one, you can get the aluminum version for a little more
if you want to hit the trails, don't go to wal-mart.

The bikes at Walmart have been made to look like they can take a beating but they can't. Looks ain't everything. If you look you'll probably find a sticker on the bike that says it is not for offroad use. If not, a disclaimer is in the owners manual.

Keep in mind that ANY bike that "looks" like a mountain bike (MTB) and sells for under, say, $600 is an all terrain bike (ATB), meant for on road and groomed trails- not for hard trail or jumping or anything like that.

So, I would strongly recommend that you save your money, then look for an ATB in a bike shop that sells for between $350 and $500 and have no rear suspension. Ask for recommendations. You will be MUCH happier.

If you are just bouncing around the neighborhood roads and are worried about potholes and curbs a Walmart bike might be fine, but I can tell you that the warranties on those bikes will not cover any failure from abuse... and that means offroad riding or ramping or anything other than riding on paved roads.

While you can get good and solid mtb, the price range is a bit higher, try 300 to 400 bucks. Don't go to wall mart or general sports department. Go to a bike shop, where they can guide you to make a better choice that will also fit you better.

I've got to disagree. The bikes at Wal-Mart can indeed take a beating...once.

I agree with the Bianchi answer, but I love Celeste. Another good brand is a Specialized.

There may be some deals on ebay if you have an account but shipping may become an issue.
