Play for short periods of time at first and eventually, your fingers will get calloused and it won't bother you anymore.

I am a guitar player too!!! I haven't experienced any pain. Try using picks, and I also have callouses. I have been playing since the 5th grade, and I am a Freahman now. ALso, use a thinner pick, that way your fingers don't get all of the impact. It really only hurts for the first month or two. Then your fingers will develop the callouses, and it won't hurt anymore!!!!!

Callouses, callouses. You need callouses. You didn't say how long you've been playing.
May take 30-60 days to develope callouses.
And no long nails.

No pain no gain..it always hurt for beginners. Practice everyday and the skin at the tip of your fingers will be hardened. You will feel no pain thereafter...
