I am 61 and have been diagnosed with neuropathy. It just started real fast and I have no idea how I got it or what caused it. If you have it, were you ever told why or how you have it. My doctor just looks at me and says he doesn't know. I did have major surgery 5 weeks before this started but they keep saying that didn't do it.

The most common cause of neuropathy is diabetes. Some other causes are:

Alcoholism

Abnormal protein buildup in organs (amyloidosis),

Autoimmune diseases, in which your immune system attacks and damages parts of your body, including your nerves

Some tumors, which can press on nerves and cause direct or remote damage (paraneoplastic syndrome)

Multiple system atrophy, a degenerative disorder that destroys the nervous system

Surgical or traumatic injury to nerves
Treatment with certain medications, including some chemotherapy drugs and anticholinergics

Other chronic illnesses, such as Parkinson's disease and HIV/AIDS

If you have it, there must be some way for someone to tell you how you got it. Ask your doctor for a referral to someone who can tell you.
