This term was used in the depression reffering to having enough money to one or the other but not both. If you walked to work you could afford to buy your lunch. If you took the bus you'd have to carry a lunch.

It also could mean, do you live close enough to work that you can go home for lunch (close enough to walk)?
If you don t live close, then you have to carry your lunch with you to eat there. At least that s the way my dad interpreted it--and he lived at the time the question was first posited.

I take my lunch but too far to walk. That would be GREAT to have a job walking distance. You would get into shape and save so much on GAS. Good question

I live more than 15 miles from work.. I drive.
But I do carry my lunch most days.
