The only thing that has saved the people in Florida is that they have the "Save our home" act on homes that have a homestead. It restricts the state from raising property taxes any more than 3% of the taxable value per year. That is the only thing that saved them. Too bad insurance companies didn't have to follow that same law. Many homeowners have gone to self insuring because of the ridiculous high premiums.
It it up to the people of Indiana to fix this, not the federal government.

No.
But in saying that.
The people who are expecting the government bailout absolutely do not deserve one!!!
When I first heard about the 40 year mortgages, I couldn't believe that lending institutions would stretch out payments that far to make them a little lower.
No down payment for a house?! No. your lending to people with no track record of fiscal responsibility...they're asking/begging for problems later.
Low interest loans? OK, but they were adjustable, this means they would go up...and they DID!
The buyers under such conditions had NO BUSINESS owning a home...and the lenders were just asking for trouble, AND NOW THEY HAVE IT!
and who gets to pay for this foolishness? The taxpayer!
While Bush repeatedly crowed over record home ownership rates, he didn;t stop to contrmplate the results of such foolish and stupid financing shemes?
Now..a tax bailout? Not on your life they deserve that,,,they deserve foreclosure, liquidation, and jail for fraud.

Yes, in the form of cutting property tax and installing a sales tax to spread the tax burden out to everyone, not mostly on property owners.

Stop whining.
Homeowners bought the house knowing there would be taxes on it. If you don't want to pay property taxes -- rent.
