you can use your own mp3s u just have to import them into itunes. Itunes is the only way to get music on an iPod. Oh and I would not recomend actually buying songs from iTunes. Its a rip off. You pay a dollar a song for DFM encoded music that will only play on an iPod and it will only play on up to 5 computers. Idk about u but if I pay a dollar for a song I want to be able to do whatever I want with it when I want. I would suggest either buying those amazon.com downloads as they are DFM free or just getting ur music free from limewire.

You need to use itunes to upload everything to your new ipod. You can transfer all your mp3s to the itunes program tho. There is an itunes alternative its called Anapod Explorer i forgot if u have to pay for it, just search for it if you want to use the windows explorer (the way to look for files on yur computer) and just use that to add your songs to the ipod that way.

You need itunes to convert the format of the file to the correct format which can be played by the ipod. Just plug in your ipod & select the file which you want to transfer and it will get downloaded in your ipod.

as far as i am aware itunes is simply the software to put your songs onto your ipod. without using itunes you would need to convert your files off cd then import them using itunes. its much easier and convenient to simply use itunes from the start and import them from the cd straight away. why go the long way round.

You need iTunes to convert your Mp3s to the correct format :)

Edit - I think they play AAC files - Apple's own file type.
