If downers make me feel down, then why would I want to feel down? How could feeling down be addictive?

I know I enjoy it but I don't understand why. It seems like a paradox - enjoying feeling down.

Could it be because, despite the "down side", it dulls the pain, anxiety and loneliness?

Downers, depressants, are called such because they are "central nervous system depressants". It is more physiological than emotional. I have major depressive disorder, but I love narcotics! They make me very happy. :)

Good question. The state of feeling down is also an emotion which some people feel good being in, so it's not unusual at all. And feeling down can also gain sympathy, which can be a reward for some people. Anyway why are u even asking this? It's obvious that u are enjoying it.

They alter the normal function of neurotransmitters in your brain. Anytime you mess with your brain you run the risk of developing addictions. You can be addicted to nearly anything. Downers, probably benzos, alter the GABA inhibitory pathways, ie they slow your brain down. If you happen to enjoy this, you can quite easily become addicted to the feeling.

It's just a personal preference. I prefer downers as opposed to uppers but I'm not addicted, I just enjoy it from time to time.

maybe it just feels good to u and doesn't necessarily make u feel down. I'm kinda the same way. i cant stand when people are TOO cheerful. drives me nuts

Because you like them. You like the way they make you feel and that is that. So if you are not using them moderately and are out of control and you decide to quit it will not be because you hate them so much it will be because you like them too much.
