At work I have a laptop which has Norton 360 security on it.

When I do manual scans this finds two problems

"Adware.WinTaskad" and "Adware.Windupdates"

Norton cannot - it seems - deal with these and it tells me that I need to take manual action. A clever person visited and apparently got rid of them and the computer seemed to run better. But now they seem to be back again.

Can anyone please tell me where they come from, what they do - if anything - how to get rid of them permanently and how to stop them recurring.

It goes without saying - I suppose - that I do not visit any sites that I would consider as dodgy. I use Firefox and mainly visit yahoo and hotmail for e-mail and google for the usual searches.

Answers [simply put please] as I am not 100% tecky!

Adware are the programs usually included with other "free" programs. They may collect your personal data (like your web surfing preferences) and are used to deliver targeted ads and/or spam.

There're two main sources of getting adwares to your pc: by installing some poor "free" software (and not reading license agreement where the adware is usually mentioned), and by surfing with an unupdated browser to a website that exploits some security hole.

To remove an AdWare try LavaSoft AdAware (http://www.lavasoft.com), it's free, easy and efficient.

The manual way is to remove the infections via the Registry. The way for you is to go to www.eset.com and download the 30 day trial version of NOD 32 Anti-virus. This is far superior than AVG.

Removal instructions for WinTaskad:-
http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2004-120117-0840-99&tabid=3

Follow the instructions on the page exactly.

I'm not a huge fan of Norton anti-virus products having been stung in the past although I am told that Norton 360 is much better. You may wish to try some of these free anti-spyware products to remove the other threat:-

If your viruses still keep coming back, consider a different antivirus solution such as NOD32

if u had ever gotten any material from the pc and then backed it on a stick or rom this could have re-infected u.
Viruses and spy-ware normally hide in the restoration point
they are three options
deactivated the restore point system ant then re-run the scan.
get avast 4.7 pro to do yo work
or format the hard drive
but b4 u format perform a spy ware check using spy bot search and destroy
wish u luck

Norton is one of the worst antivirus softwares!!! There are many others (even free) antivirus softwares that are 100 times better than that crappy Norton.
Norton was a good antivirus program a few years ago, but today, it's only crap.
You also should install a good antispy software as well. I recommend the "Spyware Terminator", it's also free.

Merry Christmas!

A very good (and free) antivirus software is the free "AVAST" - go to http://www.avast.com and download it (after you have uninstalled Norton!!!).
And also AVG Free is very good! Available here> http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2
But only ONE antivirus software on your computer, never more than one!

don't use free security software unless your looking for false positives and prompts telling you to delete files. sheesh some people just don't get it. losers need to get a job and buy decent software. Norton is the best and if you don't like it TO BAD WAH! Do as Lewis suggested, chat with a live analyst . they will resolve your problem and you wont have to download 50 security programs and seize your computer to fix the problem.
