I remember when I was a kid, hearing something on the radio about extremally large hail that fell somewhere around Sydney Australia, it was so large that it came through roofs of buildings and caused brick walls to collapse. I think it was something like the size of basketballs. I could not find anything on the internet about it though, and I know there is a lot of cazy bs on the internet, so if a "real story" does not show up than it must be fake. I'm curious though, what is the largest hail on record? What is the limit for a hailstone? is basketball sized hail even possible?

The world's heaviest hailstone was recorded at 2.25 pounds or 1.02 kg 14 Apr 1986 in Gopalganj District, Bangladesh. It's not size as much as weight since a hail stone recycles through a thunderstorm several times before it falls out and it is the weight compared to the vertical motion in the storm which determines when it will fall out.

This page
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hail
shows a picture of that record hailstone and shows it to be very irregular.
The problem with a stone the size of a basketball (30" circumference, about 9.5") that is fairly solid is that as the volume increases, the mass increases by the square of the diameter, but the area only goes up by the square. Since hail stones are built up by wind forces blowing them repeatedly though icing regions, at some point the wind force on the area gets overwhelmed by the weight/mass behind the area.

I am not sure of the record size hail but I take car insurance claims all day (in the us) and the largest that I have heard of is softball size hail. I know that hail that size can do some major damage so I can't even imagine basketball size hail!

I'm pretty sure the biggest hail ever was in Bagladesh during a Cyclone. I dont know how big they were though, but for consistency i think they were the largest. The largest piece of Ice to fall from the sky was in Scotland. It was about the size of a small car!

The largest hailstone "officially" recorded fell near Aurora, Nebraska on June 22, 2003. It measured 7 inches in diameter and measured almost 19 inches in circumference. And that was after some melting, so it was likely even a little larger! That likely put a dent in something!
