I am taking the 3 day version of monistat. I have had a yeast infection before, while pregnant, so I am aware of the symptoms, but this doesn't seem to be working. Last night was the first night I used it, so I have two more left, but I feel worse than ever! I feel itchy and uncomfortable. My ob/gyn is closed Christmas Eve and Day other than emergencies, which this is not, but damn if it isn't the most uncomfortable thing ever!!!
Does it get worse before it gets better? I don't remember that happening last time. Thank you!

A really bad case of it can take the full five days, and sometimes you really do need to go another five besides. The old monostat used to recommend a minimum of 7 days, preferably 10. For the itch, you might try a bit of plain yogurt thinned out with a little water and applied externally. Another thing to try is a betadine/medicated douche, obviously before you used the monistat. That will at least reduce the numbers you have to attack with the monistat, and often helps with the itch as well. Go commando at every opportunity, to let in plenty of air. Also dump any nylon undies, and wear all cotton. Not the nylon with the cotton patch sewn on top, that doesn't do any good. Dump the pantyhose for the duration as well, and try to wear natural fiber clothing. If you can do with a dress instead of pants, that's the best, because you can get a little more airflow in the area. I know- it's cold outside, and that's not always practical everywhere. But it's an option to consider. Hope you get some relief soon.

This can be a common reaction when using Over The Counter medicines for yeast infections more than once.

The fact is, your body builds up a tolerance to these medications and just like when you use antibiotics to fight a cold, you may develop immunity to their effects.

I always recommend natural remedies for yeast infections only because of my own bad experience with Over the Counter solutions. Natural remedies usually cure my yeast infection within a day or two and I don't need to worry about the side effects and irritation from Over the Counter meds.

With OTC cures, the candida bacteria gets killed too quickly and can initially make the yeast infection symptoms more painful. That sounds like what you're experiencing.

You can find natural cures listed on the site below.

Most yeast infections get worse over time and the treatment that you can get does not work immediately and so therefore they do get worse before they get better. See if you can get a cream to apply to the area in your local supermarket. In the UK you can buy Canestan, I am unsure whether this is available in the U.S

You should start to notice improvement in another day. If you still don't notice any improvement around day 4 (when you will be done with the medication) check with your primary care physician to see what they suggest.

Believe it or not a little sugar free yogurt inserted vaginally will , seriously , improve the situation. It helps correct the PH balance.
