Mulereiner's christmas wish got me to thinking. Do you believe the animals can relly talk at midnight on Christmas Eve as legend supports? When younger I used to always try and stay up and see if my dog would talk to me , the the anticipation of actual Christmas day and Santa coming always left me exhausted and I was snoozing longe before midnight. As i got older the appeal of trying to stay up late left me and I never bothered with trying to see if it wad true. Wouldn't it be cool if they could talk at midnight, If they did I wonder what our horses and other pets would say.

I honestly wish it was true, but I'm afraid i wouldn't be able to fall asleep because my hamster would talk to himself all night, my dogs would randomly start yelling, "Hey! You! On the street! Yeah you! This is my yard! Don't forget it! If it weren't for this fence I'd lick you to death!" and my horse, who is kept at my friends stable, would be taunting his "big bro" that santa would bring him more gifts. rofl, Oh, forgot the rabbits...hm, this is tough..."Get away from my celery!" and "This is MY side of the hutch!". But it would be worth it to have a totally sleepless night just to see it.

i've heard the ledgen two ways, one that they talk so they can sing praise to the king and 2 that they kneal down. I thinki prolly believe the second or think it would be too cool. I also hear that it only works it you hang a holly bough over your barn door. I don't have a barn but i hang holly out of reach near there turnout every xmas eve. Maybe i'm a sappy romantic but i think it's a cool ledgen, heard it first when i was 12 and now i'm 21 and a hardend army wife. Nothing wrong with a heart that can still dream. I don't know why but i've never really looked for it in my household pets, only in my livestock/beast of burden animals. I guess because they were the one's knealing that first Christmas.

I like to believe they can! I remember telling my children that wonderful story, I think it has it's roots in the cattle and sheep and donkey all about the manger of the infant Jesus and don't forget that every burro has the cross on it's back,Since Jesus rode through Jerusalem on the back of a female donkey and her colt; the Lord put His mark on him I believe that. The humble and help full donkey! And don't forget the story of Balaam (numbers 22:1-35) and how his donkey saw the angel of death approaching and saved Balaams life and then the donkey spoke asking Balaam "why have you struck me these three times when I never did you wrong" So if the Lord says that donkey spoke, it spoke! Also the serpent spoke to Eve in the garden of Eden, if God desires to use an animal to speak, speak it shall!--and Samson used the Jaw bone of a donkey(Judges 15:14-17)and killed 1000men and said I have used the jaw of a donkey to make donkey's out of them". So you just may want to creep out ever so quietly at midnight and listen! Merry Christmas everyone!

what 1crossmare typed.......

they use body language primarily to communicate to each other, and any other animal bright enough to figure it out. they teach other animals with a head toss, stomp on the ground, nip or swift kick often, my dog knows what a horse has in mind, play or serious. she runs interference for me often and succeeds in letting me know i'm not paying attention to the horse as close as i should more often than i like to admit. an experienced loyal dog will sense a horse's fear or mischievous nature instantly while i have to process observations. All the dogs i've had around horses try to help and i'm sure that they have saved me a lot of trouble more times than i know. one noisy dog distraction when a horse is about to panic can be a big help. when the horse witnesses the dog respond to verbal noises of mine i think it makes it easier for the horse to accept who the dominant one present is at the moment.
humans are the ones with communication problems, they often can't hear anything they don't agree with. a horse on this side of the planet will have zero problems communicating with any horse from anywhere or any person of any nationality who recognizes and pays attention that the animal is trying to let you know what's on it's mind. horses are not good liars, they are very honest and forthright and will let you know what they think if you pay attention to the individual. when they relax and focus on you in a situation that their instincts tell them to be elsewhere it's a neat vote of confidence and not to be taken lightly. trick them wrongly and you will probably end up regretting it one way or another. be a rock of confidence for them and never lie to em and they will jump off a cliff for ya, not questioning at all that you know what yer doin.
if you give your horse a heartfelt hello at midnight it will return your greeting and be glad to see you. if it don't, you are doing something wrong, hopefully just not noticing that it did and ya missed it. I know what my horses have to say to me at midnight fairly often. stand next to a tree in a very dark pasture and somehow they see very well and can safely come to see if their treat you brought them is a tangible one or just a reassurance that you care.
what they have to say depends on what they hear, just like you and i.

yes, in horsey language, unfortunately. when i was little i used to stay up as long as possible to see if my toy horse would grow big like a real horse and talk english to me! if my horses could talk to me, they would say these exact words "let us out and go open up your basement door so that we can pig out on OUR hay! if you don't, we'll jump the fence and kick down the door!"

Yes, I believe for my little ones sake...... It is great to pass on or tell stories that I grew up with. She enjoys it as well as I do!! It is all in the spirit of things!! Keeps the children, children & us with the memory of the simpler times as we tell our little ones the great stories. So why not keep the spirit alive??!!!!
