Hard question! There are almost as many approaches to writing songs as there are songs.
I write words, without thinking about music.
I write music without thinking about words.
I then see if I can make any of my words and music fit together.
Is that the best way? Who the he** really knows. It works for me.
Whatever you do, make sure your musical structure is correct. It's going to have to make sense to the drummer for example.
Make sure your creative writing is up to speed also. It's helpful if your words tell a story or have some sort of meaning when you are done stringing them together.
Mostly, just have fun and I'll be looking for you on the charts.

SAD or ROCK? Okay.. I'm no longer definite on that. If by way of unhappy you imply.... sluggish and sort of emo... Evanescence has plenty of those, as good as rock, similar to: Hello Like You My Immortal Your Star Missing All That I'm Living For Sweet Sacrifice Weight of the World Going Under The Veronicas: All I Have Heavily Broken In Another Life Someone Wake Me Up My Chemical Romance has plenty of well rock songs, and so does Switchfoot.

Feel your emotions...
What are you feeling?
Write it down on paper and put it into a song
Don't make it to dramatic or sad or anything
If you write a song don't make it much longer than four or five minutes
One other thing...
Write the words and the beat at the same time
Like, sing the words and make sure it works
Then play it on the piano and fit everything together that way.
I write a ton of music and that's what I do every time
I hope this helps

Yes, you could. A good place to start is Garageband, make a song on it and a title. Then use the song and the title to think of lyrics to go with the song and title!

if you're intending to make the music all by yourself, i'd start with a user friendly piece of software like fruityloops. lyirc can formulate easier if you've got a backing track you're building up..
