It can take between 10 and 21 days to be effective depending on when you start taking the pill.
So you can take the pill for that one day, but you'd be better off taking a sugar pill and hoping for the best.

No no no no no! You should be using it for a few weeks before having sex. The pill essentially fools the body into thinking that it's pregnant by releasing hormones that keep you from ovulating. If you take the pill with only a 1 day notice, the egg may have already started to decend and at that point, you're fertile, pill or not.

Did your doc not tell you that you're supposed to follow the directions and take one pill everyday? And that for the first 30 days you shouldn't have unprotected sex? It takes time for the chemicals to work into your blood stream and do what they're supposed to do.
Taking one pill on the day or taking the pill only days before the act is useless and you may as well not waste your time, they'll be ineffective.
You need to take them as your doc told you to and remember they do not protect from STDs.

Talk to your doctor, and read the instructions.
BUT
My birthcontrol takes at least 7 days before it is effective (I stopped for a few months) ... and it suggests also using condoms the first MONTH in case you forget.
Remember: if you ovulate, the egg is around for several days.
Only taking the pill sometimes probably won't do anything for you at all ... talk to your doctor, get a prescription, and TAKE IT PROPERLY. Its not that expensive.
(Call a sexual health clinic in the yellow pages if you can't go to your family doctor, don't have one, or can't afford the prescription)

it takes a number of days of taking the pills before they have changed your hormone levels to prevent pregnancy.
if you are going to be taking one at a time, you may as well not take any because you are doing nothing.....
people become pregnant when they forget one pill so would it make sense to be able to take just one a month? just take them regularily every day and they will go a long way for you.

NOOOO! Your doctor should have told you this when he wrote out the prescription. Birth control takes a while to kick in. I would not have unprotected sex period, but if you choose to, the pill takes about 2 weeks to kick in, sometimes more. Use a condom and anti-spermicidal to reduce your chances of both pregnancy and socially transmitted diseases.

No, you usually have to start taking the pill on the first day of your period to be protected. If you just took it on the day, it wouldn't prevent an egg from being released.

If you take them like that you will end up pregnant. You have to take the pill how it is prescribed.
