With having babys sleep on their backs now you should have "tummy time" a few minutes every day. Just make sure you are right there with them the entire time. Tummy time helps them strengthen their necks and backs. It will also help prevent getting a flat spot on the backs of their heads. Which has become a problem lately. My son is 3 months old and sitting up with some help already. I credit this to tummy time and strengthing his neck and back. And now since he can sit up he's looking all around and learning new things every day!

Tummy time is more about encouraging their neck muscles to strengthen by having to hold their head up themselves. Eventually they will start to get mobile because they are on their tummies but its more about the neck and back muscles.
Children can't really be taught/forced to get mobile through tummy time as they will all do it when they are ready. For some it is earlier than others. I'm a big fan of tummy time as strengthening their neck and back muscles is very important.

I don't think it needs to be encouraged. The whole reason for it is more about giving the back of their heads a rest (because of "back to sleep") and less about mobility.
My son hated being on his stomach. Screamed if I tried so I didn't do it anymore. He crawled on his own at 6 months and walked at nine so I don't think it hampered him too much.
If your baby likes tummy time then go for it, if not- that's OK too
Good luck!

I think it should be encouraged, but I wouldn't just let the baby cry if they hate it. Try and get down on the floor with them and play with them so they don't feel alone. Floor time, either on their front or back is important for their physical development.
Letting a baby sit in a swing/carrier/chair all the time is not a good idea as it restricts their movement.
They should be held a lot and have time to stretch out on the floor.

i think so cause we did it the first week he was born little by little and by 2 months he was rolling from back to tummy which is unusual that early. he was also very strong.....the other kids in his play group are 2 months older and they still arent rolling at all (they are 7 months now) and i know they dont do tummy time. My sone is starting to crawl now at 5 months....so that is just wha ti have experienced.

It think it should be encouraged but only a little. You can lay on your back and put your bub on your chest and it will work the same muscles. Your baby is likely to do it longer and more often, and also enjoy it a lot more.

I asked my pediatrician this question and she said that I shouldn't put my 3month old daughter often and for a long time on her tummy as the pressure on her thorax isn't good. But once in a while is ok. My daughter never really cared much about tummy time. She didn't cry but she didn't really enjoy it either. She would only lift her head a little once and then get herself in a comfortable position with her head loking to one side and then she would just lie there and wait for me to turn her around so there wasn't really a point in that.... I now place her toys all around her on her blanket where she lies on her back and she starts to reach out for them. She is starting to roll now also and is fairly good at holding her head steady and up.

I gave all three of my kids tummy time and they all really enjoyed it. My youngest is now 8 months and loves being in the floor rolling and crawling around.
