I have a 1987 Mazda RX7 SE and I would like to squeeze some more horse power out of it. The problem is that I don't know much about rotary motors so I was wondering where should I start?

Hey, I've got an 87 SE as well. First you should go for exhaust, not intake. Do you want your car breathing in through a pipe and out through a straw? No. Try Racing Bear, Corksport, or Apex'i exhaust systems. Other cheaper brands are avaliable, but those three are the best for rotary performance. Next go to the intake. Your best bet would be to fab up a CAI (Cold Air Intake). They make headlight covers that are vented that let in cool, outside air. Let that vent to the cold air box, in which you should have an upgraded, cone filter. If you're going to start modding your RX-7, go on forums. They help on everything, and you'll be getting information on others experiences with certain products and what you should/ shouldn't do.

And of course, a full tune up is a first for any car you get...

The first thing I'd upgrade is the alternator. The 86-88 stock one (70 amps) simply cannot handle the load of the engine, headlights, AC, stereo and brake lights without killing one or more items. Plus, with that much load on it, it won't charge your battery back up. The 89-91 alternator puts out 80 amps and is a direct bolt-on swap, but still can be run too hard. I'd reccomend one from an FD (93+ RX7) because it'll handle anything you throw at it. But you'll have to swap the pulley and wire it properly. There's a few articles on the RX7 Club about this.

Rotary engines are meant to be revved high. Once you rev it higher, you'll find that your car is suprizingly quick. Also, if your car doesn't have the factory LSD, be sure to get one. My 1987 RX7 came with one, but I have the GXL model, just under the Turbo. And last, check your oil every week. Rotary engines use some oil by design to lubricate the apex seals and combustion chambers

Intake and Exhaust the 13B can only make so much power stock after that a Turbo or something would be needed for more power. Also tune up your REx that will help in just overall performance and drive ability.

Rx7's are one of my favorite cars. Its important to learn all u can about the car join one of the many Rx7 forums u will lean alot.

Work on your intake system- rotaries respond well to better breathing as they love to rev. Ther are alot of parts available for the 12A and 13B engines. I believe you have the 1.3 liter 13B and there are both factory and aftermarket turbos available. If you get into the internals of the engine, focus on the apax seals as they are the cause for engine failure when they wear. Also, the better that you balance the engine, the more it it will respond to high rpms.

The cheapest most bang for the buck would be your air intake. high flow with a aluminum (smooth tube).

Next would be your exhaust.

From there you can use computer upgrades or whatever floats your boat but the air intake is the most serious big jump for so little investment you can get on almost any vehicle.
