JJ,,,you can tell by the VIN number or the Engine Number.
VIN is on the steering head,,the part of the frame where forks bolt on.
Originally there's a tag with some info on it.
If that's missing,,,the number is Stamped into the frame in same area.
Here's a pic of a Kawasaki which shows the typical location.

.........................................................................................
Engine number should be on Top of engine at the Right/Rear Corner.
Almost directly above kickstarter,,it's real obvious when you look in that area.
Here's a pic of a YZ125 Engine Number location---it's on the rectangle pad near oil filler plug.
250's are located in same place

On way Old YZ's,,,it was on opposite side of engine,,,the Left side,,, up towards the cylinder
Find either of those numbers ,,edit your question & add the numbers and we can tell you what year and series.
Post Both #'s if you can,,,,occasionally engines will be swapped.
On that off chance ,,You'll need to know what engine and what chassis if you need to get parts,,service specs, etc

Locate the VIN # as TXm42 has explained and contact Yamaha. They'll be more than happy to help.
