old uncle henry? has there been anything like that? the only thing i know is the Henry the Navigator. maybe that

I've never heard the expression and I'm a old Englishman! The answer which suggested the pawnbroker is sensible. The only other idea I have is that perhaps it is an old reference to King Henry VIII.

'uncle' is a jocular reference to the pawnbroker. Maybe that's it.
