There are kits available that can remove some stuff. It depends on the depth of the scratch, certain things just plain can't come out.

One at-home method I've found that actually is really helpful (though unnerving) is, surprisingly, peanut butter. Smudge some peanut butter on the disc gently and wipe it off with a coffee filter or a fabric equally soft and smooth (paper towels may actually cause more harm than good, as they tend to be fairly rough on a delicate level).

If it's a mere scratch, and not a gash, then it's quite easy to remove. One can buy CD scratch repair kits in the United States at the local Wal-Mart or Radio Shack.

Where I live, one of the local DVD rental places offers the service of buffing out scratches with their special DVD repairing machine for $5 (US).

I have used the manual CD repair kit (which features special cloths that one uses according to the directions included in the kit). Doing it manually takes a while, and it requires a good deal of effort.

I have never used one of the battery-powered mechanical kits that are sold at Wal-Mart and such places in the United States.

Supposedly there are kits that will do it, but I tried one and it didn't work. If you can read/play the CD on your computer, try copying it to your hard drive and then making another fresh copy of the CD.

There are professional services that also claim to be able to "refinish" the CD to get the scratches off, but I don't know if they work or not.

yes. There are machines that you can buy, that basically scrape off a layer of the cd, and buff it. you'll have to buy one though. i've also heard that somehow, cleaning it with alchohol helps the scratches, but i don't think it's true.

I don't think so. I've never been able to remove one and if there were a way, I would've heard of it by now and so would most of us.
