Yes, the combined Greek forces (Sparta being one of the key) did win the war against the Persians after the battle of Thermopylae (in which Leonidas did in fact die).

United Greek citys states won with Sparta as a member of the coalition. After Leonidas, the Persians pushed on to Athens and were defeated in the naval battle of Salamis. The last battle was on land at Plataea in which the Persians were also defeated. Sparta played a part in Persia's defeat but did not win the war single-handedly.

It was not a war between Persia and Sparta. Persia's main objective was to punish Athens for the revolt against Persia a decade earlier by some cities affiliated with Athens but located in Persian-held territory. The invasion threatened all the Greek city-states, however, and most of them, including Sparta, joined in opposing the Persians.

The Greeks did win. The strong stand by the Spartans and Thespians at Thermopylae did not destroy, but did seriously weaken the Persian army. At the same time, the Athenian navy (and the weather) destroyed the Persian fleet. With a weakened army and without the fleet for reinforcements and resupply, Persia was forced to withdraw.

The main similarity is that they have a very well developed military in which the majority are required to join but other than that there are many differences Israel is a free an open society Israel is a democracy In Sparta, no one was to have any more than anyone else. In Israel, there are rich and poor Israel is culturally very different from Sparta And to all you who said that Israel is cowardly, do you know anyone else who could pull off a raid on Entebbe. Israeli Soldiers put their lives on the line, just like any other soldiers from any other country, including Arab nations. Israelis have taken huge odds on many occasions, and won. Just because they have equipment that protects them and use it, does not make them cowards, it makes them smart.

The Greeks (not just Spartans this time) turned the Persians back at Salamis, about September 20, 480 B. C.--supposedly, the day the playwright Euripides was born.
