What requirements should be fulfilled in order to consider journalism as a profession?

I think it's all three. Obviously, it's a profession and the programs are taught that way--heavy on the application. It's a craft and writing and making creative decisions quickly is a key element of the program and in a real ljob. I would get as many internships as possible and pursue any writing opportunity that you can find--whether "journalistic" or not. You need to build a portfolio for journalism these days, and even well-done blogs qualify. It's a very competitive field, but if you put the effort in, you should see a rewarding career.
