i know how men normally wear a BOW tie with a tux, but i like regular ties instead. but if it isnt okay to wear a tie, please let me know. i dont want to go there looking wierd.

No, that would look odd. You don't need a tux, just a real sharp well fitting suit if you want to just ware a straight tie. If you want the tux you CAN wear other kinds of ties that are more like collars then a bow. They are popular with younger men. Try looking through the catalogs at a tux rental store to see what styles go together well.

Just check out the red carpet pic's from Oscars and other award shows like that - there you will see many men with a regular style neck tie and a tux - personally I prefer a bowtie - it's more traditional (my taste) and I feel a tux isn't a tux without a bowtie. You could coordinate the bowtie with a nice vest (waistcoat) or cumberbund.
