For EXTREME cold you'll want mittens instead. They will keep your hands much warmer than gloves.

I work outside at a ski area and deal with two things...water and cold air. I also camp and climb all winter long in The Adirondacks, Vermont, and Northern PA. I use Outdoor Research Pro Ice Mittens. They've been replaced with the Cornice mitten.

I also wear a N2S Gore Winstopper Liner glove with the mittens.

Gonna be harder to find stuff for the kids. Try LL Bean, they carry a lot of kid friendly outdoor stuff and it's good quality.
