The manufacture & sale of metal bull bars which do not comply with the new EU legislation (Directive 2005/66/EC) for pedestrian protection became illegal on 25th May this year. Exisitng metal bull bars already fitted are acceptable.

You can still get "frontal protection systems" which do comply with the regs.

It's a pain in the backside for people such as farmers & foresters who genuinely need to protect their vehicles from stray branches, wayward cattle etc.

It certainly isn't illegal to fit bars as long as they comply to new EU legislation.
Have a look at: http://www.endura-fps.com/noncompliantmetalbullbars.html
It's a bit of a plug for their frontal protection systems, but gives you an idea.
A copy of DIRECTIVE 2005/66/EC can be found at: http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/site/en/oj/2005/l_309/l_30920051125en00370054.pdf

Yes, in the state I live in you would haft to get a special alterations permit thru the DMV! If it is an alteration that effects the safety of you or anyone else, it's hard to get!! You would haft to check with your Ins. company to see if they will increase your premium!
Happy Holidays!

Billy was right they are pedestrian killers but to answer your question check with your insurance company as it would be deemed a modification in respect to your current car insurance.

Heck, those rednecks in Texas do it all the time, so I don't see any reason why not, if you happen to live in that state. Heck, they even have rifle racks in the back seat.........so go figure............!!!
