Talk to your dad about different types of careers you can "job shadow" to learn more about them. Maybe he's got a buddy who's an engineer, a stock broker, a nurse...

Surprisingly many people can only name a handful of careers out there, Dr, lawyer, teacher and never really even KNOW what other jobs are out there and what they do.

Maybe both of you can agree to research and job shadow 4 careers a year for the next four years... and come up with a few games in between... have a Saturday where every time you see someone at work, you talk about their career and how they got there, how much they make, and so forth. Or another game where each member of the fam writes down as many jobs as they can think of in 2 minutes. 50 different careers minimum... You will learn lots.

Good luck.

You dad wants you to think about a career now because in just two years you will be applying to colleges. It is very important you know what you are interested in before you start applying to college. What college you choose will be determined by you major among other things.

I would suggest talking to your guidance counselor to find out if they have an aptitude test you can take. It will tell you what you would like to do and what you would not like. There are several online also, so you could take some online. Once you have completed the test you should have some idea for a general major. Most tests will tell you a list of jobs you would either enjoy or be highly skilled doing. You can pick any job out of the list and you will have a higher chance of being happy with that job.

Several people have suggested that you will change careers seval times in your life. This is not necessarily true. If you pick a career that meets your financial, personality, and aptitude needs you can stay in the same career your whole life; even if you change jobs. But to stay in the same career it is important that the decision is an informed one. Don't just pick something out of the air. Take several different skill and aptitude tests and pick a group of jobs that sound interesting and are good paying. This will give you a step ahead of your peers when you get to college. And a step ahead once you get in your first job.

You do NOT need to pick a career at this point. You should have an idea in which areas you have the greatest interest, such as science, English, history, etc. so that you can focus on taking more courses in those areas.

Your HS should have career information and tests that you can take--ask your counselor. What types of things interest you? Do you like science? Math? Writing? Business? tudying history or cultures? All those are clues to your interests. I wouldn't worry until at least 11th grade, when you start focusing on colleges or other training.

Don't worry about careers right now. You are just starting high school! Just concentrate on doing well in your classes, taking classes that would be required for you to get into college. Remember that while you have a list of high school graduation requirements, those requirements are not necessarily the same for getting into collge. You may have to take more math, science, english, etc. than required to get in, also higher level classes. Take electives in areas you're interested in. This may eventually lead you to some college majors that you would be interested in. Don't worry though, you have plenty of time. Most people in college don't even know their "career" until the 2nd year or later!

I'm sorry your dad thinks now is the right time to chose a career. Chances are you may change your mind several times before you settle on something.

But to appease him, try researching on the Internet for "career tests" or there is a test I once took and it was titled "what should my major be?" And they'll ask you different questions about your interests and lack of interests and from there it will say what type of job you might be good at and then you can look at the answers and agree and tell your Dad you think you'd be interested in a career in that area.

I don't necessarily think you should be thinking about careers now, but I think it's important to start trying to find out what you're interested in that way you can make your class schedules benefit you in the future. If you like science, take extra science classes for electives, same goes for art, music, math, history, etc.

Good luck!

you don't. for now, just think about what you enjoy doing, and what would be a career that would let you do that.

some questions to ask yourself would be:
do you like open spaces and being outdoors, or comfortable air-conditioned offices?
do you like artistic stuff (not necessarily art itself) or mechanical (more like building, and computers and stuff)?
how comfortable are you with computers?
how long are you willing to spend in college and grad school before you actually start working?

so, for now, just think about those, and then when winter break ends, go to your counselor or college/career center person at school and talk to them. i'm sure they'd give you a lot more insight into careers, cause they're the ones actually trained for it.

as for your dad, ask him when he chose a career, ok?

oh, and don't worry about your choice too much, either. it's _nice_ to know what you want to be, because then you can take classes specifically geared toward your chosen path, but, technically, you can change your college major decision until your junior year in college, and as long as your major is _somewhere_ near the field of your work, that's good. Just cause you get an english major doesn't mean you have to be an english teacher, you can go into any area you like, as long as you have determination and are willing to stand up for yourself and run your own life.

good luck!

Does your dad like his career? If so, take a look at what he does. Ditto for your; mom's career.

What courses do you like in high school? Notice if there is a course you really like or really hate, it can give you clues about what kind of work you might find satisfying.

Take a debate class next year, that is an important life skill and also may open your eyes to careers that require this skill if you find you do okay at it.

See if your ;high school counselor can help you find people that you can job-shadow, which means spend the day with in the summer or school vacations/holidays to give you an idea of what that kind of work is like.

haha there is no reason for you to pick a career now! I think what is important in high school is to get the best grades you can in the hardest classes possible, that way once you get to be a senior you will be ready to apply to colleges and have a choice in what ones you want to attend. If you are forced to decide on a career right now, you are obviously going to change anyways, don't worry so much about the future and focus on the present and maintaining that gpa, that is what is important!

i do no longer think of you may desire to p.c.. a occupation now, notwithstanding it would not harm to commence thinking approximately it. the final careers are those the place you do what you take excitement in, yet no longer something is desperate in stone - maximum persons replace careers a minimum of as quickly as of their life. additionally, look with the aid of your state's Employment Outlook documents to be certain what careers will in all risk be in call for when you graduate, and steer faraway from something which will make you under approximately 50 grand each year (what factor is there in doing what you like in case you won't be able to pay your costs?). yet undergo in innovations that maximum jobs human beings carry are jobs they in no way knew existed interior the ninth grade (i'm a sturdy medical prepare auditor interior the Pharmaceutical marketplace - you will no longer locate that one interior the books at your occupation counselor's place of work, I assure you). ultimately, once you're a imaginative guy or woman, no longer something you do would be wasted for the reason which you will locate a thank you to make the main of it.

You don't have to pick one now. It would be good to try and think of things you would like to do but you don't have to pick until after your first year of college (that is when you have to pick a major). Many freshmen and sophomores in college don't even know what they want to do so don't be to worried about it now.

If you want to try and get some ideas, you should start with what you like. If you like math and science, engineering and medical professions might be some good options. If you like English and writing you can look at journalism or teaching. The possibilities are endless but be sure to pick something you like.
