Breasts have been a topic of discussion for years with many wondering why women want larger breasts. There are many reasons, some of which are shallow and purely cosmetic but many that go much deeper, right down to the self confidence of a woman.
The size of the breasts a woman will have in her adult years begins to develop during puberty and by the time she has reached her early twenty’s the breasts are fully developed. There is a misconception that body fat is a requirement for large breasts so that the more fat there is on the body of a woman the larger her breasts will be. And although body fat does play a small role in breast size, genetics plays a much larger role, which is why thin girls can have large breasts without having implants.
Women seeking to have a breast enlargement are generally healthy, younger and have secondary education, thus a higher socio-economic status. Many of these women are not happy with their appearance and may have suffered years of teasing resulting in low self esteem. Other reasons for choosing to have a breast augmentation include the loss of volume to the breast after a pregnancy, reduction of breast mass after losing weight, a difference in size between the two breasts, breast cancer, and simply not being happy with their small breast size.
Some women complain of difficulty finding clothing that fit properly because of a torso that is not properly proportioned and having a breast enlargement can correct the problem. Other women lack self confidence as a result of small breasts and seek out a breast augmentation to feel better about themselves.
The majority of patients who seek out a breast enlargement are immediately happy with the results. They remain happy at the 2 year mark, as well as the 5 year anniversary. Even women who have had to have surgery again due to complications still remain positive about the experience. Studies indicate an increasing number of women choosing to go back for larger implants within just a few years of the original augmentation.
Implants date back to 1895 when adipose tissue was used to change the shape or size of the breast. In 1889 an attempt to inject paraffin met with fatal results. The early 1900s saw many other substances tried. Some were very radical such as glass balls, ivory, and terylene wool, and formaldehyde polymer sponges. None of which were successful.
The 1950s through to the 1960s saw silicone injections become very popular but these also met with disastrous results with breasts hardening and in some cases the damage was so severe the women had to undergo mastectomies.
Today the implants are not only safe they are very effective leaving the woman with many breast augmentation options relating to the size and shape of the breast. The implant has an outer layer of firm elastic silicone and the inside is either filled with saline which is just salt water or silicone gel. There is less than a 10% chance of leakage and with saline it is simply absorbed within the body causing no ill health problems. The implants should last at least 10 years.
Prior to the surgery the size and shape of the new breasts are discussed with the surgeon. The procedure is very safe however the surgeon will discuss the few possible side effects that occur occasionally such as tenderness, pain, and some swelling for the first few days as well as a burning sensation in the nipple for a month or so until everything has healed up properly. A decision will also be made relating to the incision type. Options include inframammary, periareolar, transaxilary, transabdominoplasty, or transumbilical.

Silicone is a type of material inserting into the breast to help enlarge them.
Some women chose to have it done because they want their breast larger. Others do it because they've had cancer and had to have their breast removed. In order to look as normal as possible after surgery, they have implants put in to replace the tissue removed so they can still have breasts.
Silicone is not the recommended material anymore. Saline is what a lot of women are using now. The silicone was leaking out of the bag it was place in into the chest wall and making women sick. Some had to have it removed and replaced them with the Saline sacks.

It is done either for reconstruction due to an illness (i.e cancer) or augmention..to increase the size of the breast. Not sure what you mean by how it helps a woman. It is more safe than the saline method that could leak and cause toxic problems. Silicone is inserted surgically using different methods. Refer to my source for more information.

They really don't look natural, no matter how well the surgery is done. In many women, it's possible to see the outlines of the implants at the tops of the breasts. Then they get the huge gap down the middle and breasts that point outwards. I'm sorry to say this but they just look gross.

It is for cosmetic reasons.
Implants are placed in a plastic surgery to make the breast look big and shaped.
It is actually stupid to go for plastic material in the body to show off.
Truth will be anyway known to the mate and it will be embarassing to say that he has been shown what you are not

A breast implant is a prosthesis used to enlarge the size of a woman's breasts (known as breast augmentation, breast enlargement, mammoplasty enlargement, augmentation mammoplasty or the common slang term boob job) for cosmetic reasons; to reconstruct the breast (e.g. after a mastectomy; or to correct genetic deformities), or as an aspect of male-to-female sex reassignment surgery.

Due to the wandering eyes of men, women feel the need to enlarge their breasts.
Self-esteem could be part of it also.
Personally as a man, a breast is a breast and regardless of size, besides providing milk as needed for a child, they are all beautiful.
