The ego. Fear is a trick of the ego. Fear is not real. It is the ego tricking us into playing a small game in life and playing it safe and not making remarkable accomplishments. The ego is all about looking good, being right about certain things, and being in control. The more we notice those and become aware of how those 3 things limit us and hold us back, then the less fear will have a grip on us.
When you are experiencing ego driven fear, immediately ask yourself "What would I do if I wasn't afraid?" The answer to that question is always the solution. If fear is the ego tricking you, then that question is the way to trick it back and go around it and keep moving onward and upward. I have gone on to achieve great things with just that one little trick. Try it the next time you're really worried about looking bad, being wrong, or not being in control. Fear is a trick of the ego. Don't buy into it.

Are you asking what makes ME fear, or what makes people in general fear? Being a mental health professional with 20+ years experience, now retired, I try to answer from the proper perspective, so, I thought I'd get that clarified. God Bless you.

The instinct for self-preservation. It arouses the "fight-or-flight" reaction in me, then I am ready to fight or flee, whichever seems most appropriate and self-serving at the time.
