The only way to get the cell for free is to go on to another contract. Cheapest option for you would be to buy a cheap prepaid and stick your sim in it to continue your plan. Otherwise you will need to add another contract.

If you are currently on a contract with a cell phone company and your phone breaks but you don't have phone insurance with your plan, then in order to get another phone you would have to pay retail price on another phone. There will be no discounts in purchasing another phone.

Your best bet is to buy a prepaid phone which is less than $100 dollars depending on the cell phone model and activate that phone in replacing your broken phone. For example, if you had verizon wireless phone and you broke your phone then you can buy a verizon prepaid phone and activate it replacing your broken phone as your contract phone. Just bring your phone to the verizon store and they will activate it.

A not free but cheap way of getting a phone is going on EBay and buying a very cheap phone. I've found decent working phones for under $20 shipped.
