how do i sync a wii remote to a console?

Im at a friends house and i cant get my remote to work with her console, how do i sync it up, and then will it still work on my wii at home?

First start the Wii
Then press the middle button next to the - and +
After click on the resync and then do what it said to do.
Then you should be good to go

There is a button on the console that looks like a signal press that then press the same button on the Wii remote!
