Like he would have wanted his mother or daughter treated.

Should? With love and respect.
However, if my experience has been any clue, that would be the quickest way to lose a woman. I've never been with a girl that I didn't treat with complete respect and honor. I have a great sense of humor, pull out chairs, hold doors, watch my language, treated her family with complete respect, etc. Every girl has left me.
Most have left me for another guy that did one or more of the following: ignored her, insulted her regularly (just once is bad, but this guy repeatedly would do it), was going only for sex and left if he didn't get any within two weeks, beaten her (two of the other guys did this), got her pregnant and then left; and one that not only did not hold the door for her but attempted to pull it shut so that she could not get in.
And the response whenever any one of the girls was asked why she just didn't leave the guy was always the same, because "I love him. I know he treats me bad, but I still love him." Verbatim, not one deviated from that statement in any way.
If you want to keep your girl, I suggest you beat her in the morning and then ignore her until dinner time.

With respect as they should any person.
People always seem to forget the golden rule:
treat others as you yourself wish to be treated.
Now if your looking for someone to say "lavish them with gifts", well, yes that too.
If someone really cares about another then they should be in their thoughts always.
Funny though how some of the nicest people can be so cruel in some relationships, usually because of there own insecurities.

as a woman I vote for lioness's answer,
however I would like to make a quick comment to Grad... my hubby was the same way and was treated horrid by all his girlfriends, until he met me.
He was very happy he did not change or become bitter while trying to find a woman who appreciated the way he treated her.
When you watch the "bad" ones walk away feel happy that you did not marry them, just wait til you find the special one that will love and respect you back.

As an equal. With respect and care. He should attempt to show chivalry like opening doors and pulling out chairs. If she shows independance and uneasiness at this, he should respect her ability to take care of herself.
Hey gradjasan, she's out there, you just haven't found her yet. You sound like you are on the right track, hang in there!

Civility.
Honesty.

In a longer term relationship, add Forgiveness to the list.
Same list for women towards their men.

Well, we can't really answer this....only he can!
Really, what it comes down to...is if he cares or loves her?
If he loves her...then love is shown. (he loses mind control and the heart would take over) It would be obvious. "Love is Blind" - or - "Fool in Love"
If he cares, but doesn't necessarily love...then, You would see small signs ..but eventually, it can fade as time goes on. He may even become the biggest Jerk of all time!
