What joe says is right. I had an Oscar that went on a very long hunger strike(months), then resumed eating as if nothing had happened. Just keep his water quality in great shape and once or twice a week offer a little food,if he doesn't eat it after a few hours remove it and try again in a few days. Trust me your pet won't starve.

Aside from the other good answers you have already received, it also depends on what size fish you have and what its diet was before you bought it. It may have been fed cichlid pellets a majority of it's life and not much else. I would try small guppies or other feeder fish first that are easy to consume before moving up to larger fish. Goldfish are fun to feed them, but they also have low nutritional value as well.

How long have you had him? It may take some time for him to adjust to his new tank. It's very stressful for fish to be moved from one tank to another. Trust when those fish are hungry, they eat.
