When I turn my computer on, it works great for awhile. But then all of a sudden it slows sown dramatically.
(I'm talking about having to wait for letters to appear after I type them).
I'll restart it and it works fine again.
I do all the usuall cleanups, virus checks, defrag, etc.
Any thoughts on the possible cause and cure?

You need more ram. Restarting it clears the ram so you start running fast--until you, again, run out of ram. Go into msconfig startup and uncheck any progs you dont need starting up and running all the time and you'll run better and last longer.

Something you are running has a "memory leak." This terrible sounding condition is quite common on any Windows box you've ever seen.

Memory leaks occur because of a theoretical difficulty in the way programs clean up resources they are finished using. When they clean up memory resources, that memory becomes "fragmented" because of imperfections and the inability of an operating system to move entries in the main scratchpad memory buffer.

The only way to clear up the problem is to wipe out all of memory and start over again. Which is exactly what you do with a shutdown/restart sequence.

Sad to say, therefore, that you are experiencing normal behavior for the piece of crud that is any Windows system, and you are already correctly applying the workaround.

Nor do I know of any software you can add to fix the problem. it is so deeply ingrained in the memory management methods of operating systems that I don't think it CAN be fixed. I know it exists as an issue in Windows, Unix, and OpenVMS. It used to be a problem in OS/360, 370, and 380. Lost track of those. Solaris has it. Linux has it.

The only difference for all of those operating systems is the rate at which the leak occurs. Not WHETHER but HOW FAST. So I think you have to learn to live with it.

Could be getting too hot or your running out of ram. Go to task manager and see how much ram your running to that of what you have.
