Personally I always thought that the best chat was a MUD or MOO game. Uses telnet which everyone has. And it has the advantage of having other things to do while you talk.

Or for more privacy try the IRC system (Internet Relay Chat). You can create private rooms. Support for IRC is built into many of the newer browsers.

You can play Pogo. Some of the Pogo games are free to use or you can become a member a have access to more games. All of them have chat rooms.
You do have to allow popup windows on some games for them to work properly.
