See a doctor. It could be a ligament. The fact that it has happened before but not as bad, makes me think it's probably a torn catrilage. A small tear can get bigger over time, and get more severe with each occurance. Does it still hurt as bad now? Any time I've torn cartilage, the pain lessened quite a bit after a while. When I tore my acl, it just hurt alot and didn't lessen. Either way, you need to see a doctor and have it fixed. It will not heeal properly on its own. Good luck.

It could be that, it could be worse than that or even minor but whatever it is, don't neglect it. Consult a doctor as soon as you possibly can.
Meanwhile keep putting ice on it; actually, a bag of frozen peas works better since it is more flexible. Don't throw out the bag of peas, just put it back in the freezer to keep for this purpose only.
I don't want to frighten you but I had a similar problem. I neglected my knee, suffered for 5 years, then finally a year ago had to undergo knee replacement surgery.
See a doctor today. Good luck.

Put ice on it, and elevate it. Did it just go out suddenly when you weren't doing anything? Or were you lifting something heavy or straining it? If you weren't doing anything it is more likely cartilage. If you were doing something it could be ligament. Just a guess though without knowing more.

The correct answer is that nobody knows what you may have done to your knee, and all of us our simply "guessing" which such limited information. So keep exercising the tried and true principals of R.I.C.E. (rest, ice, compression, elevation) and then use your health insurance to see an orthopedist who specialty is with knees.
