When I plug in my Wii hand remote to the Wii controller, the controller loses connection to the system!?

I'm trying to play Tomb Raider so I had to plug in the additional remote, but when I do,everything loses connection. What do I do so I can play?!

Make sure the batteries are fresh. That is the number one problem to why your wiimote could be shutting down
