Either way. For many the Christmas Eve celebration is about the birth of the Savior, and the celebrating on Christmas day can be more family oriented and festive.
For many families, they spend Christmas eve with one set of grandparents, and Christmas day with the in-laws, so they could have a big family meal each day!

On Christmas eve I'm going to relax with my family and wonder what Santa's going to bring. Then on the 25th we'll open gifts and have a huge dinner.

We have on th 25th, but for alot of my Italian friends, christmas eve is the big dinner and family gathering, with all sorts of different seafood for the meal.

I do both. We come up to St. Louis on C-mas eve to see our grandparents and then go back to Dallas late that night to sleep there and then get the "Santa" presents in the morning. Then, later that night, we eat dinner with our neighbors. We do both.

either way i suppose, my family has it on the 25th but others might have it on the 24th because of tradition, or because it's more convenient..
