If Obama ran as an independent he would not stand a chance, there is currently no evidence that a third party president would be able to gain enough votes, either from former democrats or republicans plus independents i.e Ross Perot1992-1996, Pat Buchanan 2000, Harry Brown 1996-2000. The Last president to win an election who was an independent was Theodore Roosevelt in 1912. There are some who believe that his popularity would take votes away from Clinton or Edwards, but some independents and republicans who are not going to vote republican would not vote for Hillary because she is a woman, and a Clinton, but it is a possible outcome for the democratic vote would split.

even Huckabee might be elected if the Republicans were so foolish as to nominate him.

As a bona fide liberal, Obama would steal votes from the candidate closest to him the political spectrum -- likely Hillary. That would ensure the election of the Republican in the same fashion as Bill Clinton -- less than 1/2 the popular vote but a vast majority of the electoral college votes.
