North coast is rugged and quaint. It is easy to kick around the little towns and take your time down the meandering Hwy 1. The Golden Gate is a photo must. Don’t overlook the other attractions in SF while your there. Depending upon the time of year there are a lot of events that might be fun.
In the Central Coast Gilroy has its world famous garlic festival. Castroville has its artichokes. Santa Cruz has its beach and Boardwalk. Felton has Henry Coe redwoods and Roaring Camp steam train. Laguna Seca Raceway has events like Car ralleys, Super Bike races, and Spirit West Coast Christian Music Festival, Monterey has the old Cannery Row that John Steinbeck wrote of Doc Ricketts. There is also the Monterey Bay aquarium. Point Lobos is a favorite of mine. Hwy 1 down the coast from Monterey through Big Sur is gorgeous. But it can be a long and winding road. Lots of hairpin turns and only a few gas stations but a nice day drives.
Then there is Hearst Castle, Moro Bay, Disneyland, LA zoo, Holly wood, the OC, San Juan Capistrano, Down to Sand Diego with the Wild Animal park (best in the spring when they have lots of babies) Balboa park, and Beaches.
Feel free to send me an email for more specifics.

Just drive on highway 1 (or 101). From LA to San Francisco.
Visit Santa Barbara, Hearst Castle, drive on 1 through Big Sur, stop in Carmel, Monterey, Santa Cruz then drive up to San Francisco, across the Golden Gate Bridge and up to Point Reyes.
That should take a couple of days.

Hi.
As a former Southern Californian myself, I've traveled throughout the state. In terms of the coast, I've been along it from San Diego to Crescent City(about 50 miles from Oregon). I went to school in Santa Barbara, and that city is gorgeous! I recommend Santa Barbara, in southern CA, San Simeon and Hearst Castle on the central coast, Big Sur, the Monterey Peninsula, and Redwood National Park. SAn Francisco is gorgeous, but it's a very difficult city to navigate due to hills, narrow streets, and traffic.
In terms of places inland, I strongly recommend Lassen Volcanic National Park, 50 miles east of Redding. It's like Yellowstone, but much better! It is far less crowded, less known, and less commercialized than Yellowstone, and Lassen Volcanic is much prettier!
Enjoy your trip!
