If its an auto: push in the brake. If its a manual: some of the older ones, and maybe newer ones, require you to either pull up on the ring around the shifter to allow it to go into reverse or to push down on the shifter itself to get it to go in. For example, my car requires me to push down on the shifter while pushing it towards the reverse gear in order for it to go in.

When shifting into reverse, try pushing down then shifting- or there's a grip below the top the shifter that you press before shifting into reverse. It's a safety.

if it is a manual trans then you may have to put it in first gear first then shift into reverse or like the others said you may have to push down on the the shifter while shifting it into reverse or pull up on a collar that is below the shifter knob and pull it into gear.

If the advice "larithx" doesn't work for you, you have a bad transmission. Return that car ASAP!!!

some reverses you have push down and back in sequence...

your best thing or you to do is take it back to the dealership and have them take a look at it.
