I've never notice this star until tonight..does anyone know what star it is??

That would be the planet Mars, which is one day from opposition, and currently outshines all stars. Tomorow night it will be brightest for the next 9 years. Also, by tomorow it will have moved away from the moon, so will appear even brighter in the sky. Even good binoculars reveal a tiny disk, and telescopes show at least Syrtis Major, if not one polar cap.

Yes, I also noticed it. I think it was Mars too. They say that tomorrow night is supposed to be a really good night to see it. I know a few days ago they had mentioned the fact that it was coming over the horizon just after the sun set because the Sun, Earth, and Mars were lined up for the first time in ten years. Can't wait to see tomorrow night.....oh, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
