Take it out side and plant it. It might turn into a beautiful flower that eats your neighbors cat.

scrape off the growth, as much as possible.

wipe that area all down w/ a bleach mixture (10% bleach to water). You may want to leave the mixture on the area, using a few soaked rags for a while, to make sure you've killed the growth.

wash down the entire inside using baking soda and water, in a paste as if it were comet or ajax, this will clean and deodorize it. then rinse a few times w/ plain water b/c the baking soda will be difficult to remove and all streaky

when done, leave an open box of baking soda in the back of the fridge, and change it every few months.

and oh yeah, don't leave stuff to rot in the fridge, clean it out every so often.

sounds like mold. empty the fridge completely, unplug it, wash it out with a solution of chlorine bleach and water and let it dry thoroughly before using it again. let the water run into all the places that gravity allows as the mold could be growing in places you can't see. good luck.

PS if the fridge is old, it's probably not very efficient and may not be worth resuscitating. and do you really need a 2nd fridge at all. fridges suck up huge amounts of electricity and thus contribute to global warming.

Uuuummm... Throw everything away, and then soak the affected areas in Lysol, then when that dries, take a little pint-size food keeper full of baking soda and leave it in the fridge topless for about a month.

Get rid of it? Why would you want to? This is science on the edge, man. Call The Discovery Channel. Either that or Ghost Hunters.

Vinegar water or baking soda
Let it sit a few days with the door closed.

Maybe your drip pan under the fridge. Check that as well.

Use a %10 bleach solution and clean it out. The bleach should kill whatever it is.
