If this is a quest for understanding of a culture different from your own and more than a statement hidden under the guise of rhetoric, then perhaps I could help. Otherwise just ignore my answer.

I have taken the time to study world cultures (still learning) and my husband is from Australia. He has a hard time understanding the American culture also. We have discussed it at great lengths. If you'd like to know more, I'd be happy to talk with you.

The reality is that self promotion is required to be successful in a competitive capitalist society like the U.S. If you don't have an inflated self image and toot your own horn, you can't get ahead in your personal life or business and you are doomed to poverty and loneliness.

Tall poppy syndrome is encouraged here instead of cut down. Self worth determines pay scale here. If you are shy and don't put yourself forward, someone else will come along and take your job or choice of mate. I don't like it but these are the rules here.

Our media perpetuates the materialism and greed. The education system here, most of the time, does little to counteract the media. Most of the time, the children are left to fend for themselves because both parents have to work to "keep up" with societal expectations. We have no time off to be aware or self analyze, unless we make tremendous sacrifices. Then you are an anomaly and different and you don't fit in. I hope that there will be change soon.

I don't fully understand how it must look from an outside perspective, but I have some idea of your resentment. I have traveled inside and outside of the U.S. True beauty is caring for the earth and your community, not just your outward appearance or mask. Thank you for your wish for us. We will see when we are ready. We are slow to change. I feel it happening now. Some are ready. It is a small flame. It will spread and grow.

Well you've obviously not been around American women very much! Probably reading too many magazines or watching too much tv. I will agree that some American women are bitchy, spoiled, greedy, etc...but arent there women of EVERY nationality that fit those discriptions??? Someone could say that English women are sluts and drink too much! How do you like that? Dont generalize a whole group of people by the actions of a few!

alot of the "upper class" or rich american girls will act that way not all of them but many of them, and unfortunatly when they go on their family vacations the rest of the world has to deal with them and on top of that their behavior is worse on vacation because they feel that the will never have to see those people agian so why impress them or even take the effort to be nice. then those people all over the world have yet another reason why they dont like americans or america. but not all american people are that way i am an american woman and i am pretty shy and modest, i am only bitchy when i am pregnant and even then i try realy hard to controll it or at least stay in the house when i am bitchy lol. i am not greedy or spoiled me and my hubby dont have alot of money and we still give to charity as often as we can afford to even if it is only a few dollars we try to give like every week. i dont think i am selfish but i do believe that everyone can have a tendancy to be selfish as part of being human which doesnt excuse it it just means that we all have to work on it. there are many beautiful women and handsome men in the world but true beuty decends into the soul and doesnt look down on those who havent learned to be so beautiful and gracefull yet. sometimes the ugliest person is the one who judges others. this isnt to say your bad for judgeing but you should humble your self a little and try to teach others rather than hurting them. good luck in your life and i hope it is filled with beautiful words and actions.

Ok, for those who think otherwise,

Points to ponder::
1. humble?
2. confidence bordering arrogance and being rude?
3. how many would not look upon guys from asia as dorks? how many have spoken with people from such countries without a preconcieved notion?

Not all are like that, but many are like that.

Don't blame the younger generation - blame the parents of the current generation who do not know how to raise responsible mature children and instead result in spoilt girls who cannot get enough of themselves, and think the world is at their disposal.

Its not just Americans - many Chinese, ever since the economic boom, have been able to send their daughters and sons overseas and send them money to buy cars, flats and clothes. As a result, the ones overseas are now taking things for granted and don't believe that hard work = money, but parents = money.

Contrast these to children of poorer or middle class families, where everyone has a chore to do, everyone has to work to survive. These children are the hardworkers who know the realities of life, but they are hardly acknowledged, while spoilt brats are always in the spotlight. As a result, the younger generation only have the latter to look up to.

I think that it is silly to categorize a entire group of women based on what you see on TV or the magazines. I am not full of myself and I don't associate with people like that, there are true, beautiful people everywhere just not where you are from. Vain people come from all countries, not just America.

I think you are judging American women based on what you see on TV. I do not believe this is a true depiction of a real American women. I would find it hard to find a women out of most of these to look up to as a woman or to be a role model for my children. You need to see REAL America and get to know women...not just what your see on the TV.

No. You are wrong. I am 59. I go to a Dojo to do kickboxing. The 4 young women, from 18 to 27 years old, are considerate and friendly, even to an old lady like myself. If you think Americans are like the celebrities you see on television, you are wrong. Most of us are regular people. I think we have lovely young women who care about the world's people.
You sound resentful. I am sorry if an American has been hateful towards you. Give us a chance.
C. :)!!

While I would agree that some women are full of themselves, I think the one to be concerned with here is the one making blanket generalizations and calling people they don't even know hurtful names. That's not very beautiful any way you look at it.

I am an American woman and I was a young teenager once. I'll have you know I was not full of myself, and I never thought I was God's gift. I was actually suicidal most the time so I do not know what teenage girls you're referring to. I also have been to other countries and true beauty is different for everyone.
