I am a good person. How do I know? Because if i gave in to my evil side then my name would be in the books with Hitler, Stalin, Ho Che Minh, and Genghis Khan.

Honor is what you owe yourself.
Kindness is what you owe others.
Truth is always the best answer to a question you have been asked.
Silence is always the best answer to a question you have not been asked.

Well, if you are trying to ask an actual philosophical way, you can look at it from what some philosophers talk about. Say, Aristotle would define someone being "good" as someone who leads life in moderation or a "mean". That person cannot be virtuous only by being born with talent, but through learning, so you learn how to be good, carrying a moderate life.
Immanuel Kant believes that you are good if you act to do good, for good will is the only thing that can be acted upon that is good in itself. If you act to get to an end rather than for the sake of the act itself is not a good thing according to him.
John Stuart Mill and the utilitarians believe that the most moral way to live by is by acting to pursue the greatest good for the most people. So, theoretically, if someone has to suffer in order for two more people to be happy, it is a good thing. In a way, goodness according to utility follows the Machiavelian saying of "The end justifies the means", but with the limitations that people's integrity should not be sacrificed.
PICK ONE!

Yes it goes beyond religious ideology. In fact if someone is good because they fear God then I don't think they are good. A good person has and inbuilt sympathy for others and has a natural desire to help others and do no harm. Although even somone who is not naturally inclined to goodness but always makes the choice to be good is also a good person because of their actions rather than their inclinations.

I consider myself to be a good and nice person. I respect the beliefs of others, even if I don't agree with them. I do treat others the way I wish to be treated; I help others when I am able to. I absolutely believe in equality for all humankind, and the prevention of cruelty to animals.

You are right - this is not a matter of religious or non-religious beliefs - it is about wanting to live a good life, and helping others to do the same.

If you have never committed a sin weather you did it on purpose or by accident you would be a good person. Since perfection has never been achieved in this world no one person is a good person. We have our own standards on what is good. Some one who returns something that was lost to its owner is a good person almost only to that person getting his/her lost item back, but my have killed in his/her lifetime. Or is just trying to impress or hide his / her true color.

Yes, it goes beyond affiliation and straight to the heart of what it is that makes us human.

I try to be, the main thing is the golden rule and it works for anyone, no matter their religion:
