I used to get sleepy a lot when I was driving late at night by myself, especially after leaving the house at 4:30 AM for a fly-fishing trip, and returning at 10PM. I would whack myself in the face, stick my head out the window, turn the radio up full-blast--sometimes all at once! Nothing like that really worked, and several times I woke up as I hit the warning strips on the side of the road. Even when that scared me out of my wits, I would still get sleepy in another 5 minutes.

Rather than kill myself and someone else, I started just pulling off in a parking lot somewhere and sleeping for 30-45 minutes. That was the only thing that ever worked for me. So I learned to do that no matter how late I got home.

I highly recommend that approach to others. Please...do yourself and others a favor and force yourself to take a nap, and live another day!

I get sleepy only while driving on highways and that too on really long drives (1 hour or more) mainly because there is nothing to do, Set cruise control and thats it ! With the occasional correction to stay in the same lane.. I always take a few people along to wake me up if i do fall asleep.. :)

I fell asleep once behind the wheel and almost never made it home. I had gone 4 days without sleep and was going home from my last exams and woke up with the car hit the curb and I never pressed my luck after that ever again.

Once in a lifetime was all the warning I ever needed.

Too often...
I sleep very little, so when I get behind the wheel...
My body sees this as a prime opportunity to doze off.

I totaled my car from falling asleep at the wheel...
9:00 AM on a sunny Sunday morning...
Plowed right into a truck...

It's no laughing matter...

Way too much. But the best thing (Aside from actually sleeping, that is, haha) that I've found is to get a popsicle, if you have to drive some more. You can't really fall asleep eating a popsicle!
