You have unbalanced parenthesis. I assume you are evaluating (3/x^5) / (12/x^2)

=(3x^-5)(12x^-2)
=(3/12)(x^-5/x^-2)
=(1/4)(x^2/x^5)
=(1/4)x^-3

(3/x^5) / (12/x^2)
=(3/x^5)*(x^2/12)
= (3 * x^2) / (12 *x^5)
= 1/4x^3

When you are dividing a fraction by a fraction, take the reciprocal (flip) the second fraction and then multiply the two fractions.

=(3 / x^5) * (x² / 12)

=3x² / 12x^4

When dividing two exponents, subtract the exponents.

= x^(-2) / 4

= 1 / 4x²
