i need to know the video formats and what backwards capability means

It plays videos in formats as WMV (Windows Media Videos) and MP4 file formats. As for audio it plays MP3 as well as WMA (Windows Media Audio) files. It supports Jpeg files for pictures as well.
The newer zune models have Wi-Fi (wireless synch) to transfer audio and video files to and from your computer without and cables. The older models does not have this ability but only WiFi wireless sharing songs to other Zune owners.

Zune only supports the follow video formats:
Windows Media Video (.wmv)
MPEG4 video (m4v, .mp4, or .mov)
H.264 video (.m4v, .mp4, or .mov)
