Ive played rugby and football. I can tell you that the harder hits come from playing football because in rugby there are so many rules to tackling. You cant hit someone who is in the air, dive tackle, drop your shoulder and tackle, etc. I played safety in football and did alot of shoulder-to-ribs tackles and made the ball carrier pay. you cant do that in rugby, although i did it a couple of times because of my natural football instincts. I had alot of yellow cards. in rugby you have to 'wrap up' tackle. in football almost anything goes. tell me whose softer now. yellow cards.....lol

No, it's not because we are softer. We wear much more protection because American football players are paid way way way more than Rugby players. If you were paying someone millions of dollars a year, you would want your players to be well protected.

I love football and think it is the toughest sport on Earth. That said, the guys who play rugby over seas are sickos. There are PLENTY of guys who play for the All Blacks, Springboks, or even the Lions (All - Star squad) that are as big and fast as NFL players. Rugby is the rest of the WORLDS NFL! I don't think people in the USA understand how good the athletes that play rugby in the rest of the world really are.

Rugby is the precursor to the American football.
Why so much protection? Because American football is many times more intense and physical. Many plays in American football will be considered fouls in rugby.

not a good comparison at ALL!
those are 2 completely different sports! I would rather watch a proper football (soccer) match any-day over American football, but you cant compare the two. unlike rugby the players there are much bigger and faster! they have to have the protection or most would be dead after the game.
Why not ask why you have such a hatred for all things American??!? all your questions are like this.
Why do you care??

American football is a very rough-and-tough kind of sport. Without protection, players risk severe injury and even death playing the game that they do.

Well, If you are getting tackle hard by 300lbs+ lineman and become cripple, then I think you will know why football players wear pads..

because in football the players can be left in very vulnerable positions. such as when a quarterback is throwing and a 300+ lbs d-lineman is coming from his blind side. do you have that in rugby? no!
