What kind of riding do you plan to do? The Fatboy is fine for a weekend ride.and occasional long trips , but a touring model is better suited to highway models. I haven't heard of bagger wobble in 20 years or so. unless the bike had alignment problems. the BMW arguments are outdated about the same. I have lifted the rear tire on a 2005 ultra glide classic, so the brakes seem to work pretty well. The Heritage is basically a Fatboy with Bags and a wind shield. To get decent bags on a fatboy you have to remove the shotgun pipes, and you wind up with a heritage with solid wheels any how. Your seating position on the softail is lower. try them both and see which one 'fits'. I ride my ultra about 3x as much as my Lowrider. its better in rain and the bags are great for errands.I paid less for the Ultra then my riding partner did for his BMW,in 2005. guess which one is worth more now?.

Truth be told, I like the Dyna Wide Glide the best of the new line and there is no reason a Dyna could not have an easy on/off wind screen and saddle bags.
But based on your above mentioned choices,I.E. Fat Boy vs. Electra Glide, I'd say the obvious "Tweener" would be the Heritage Softail Classic. similar in many ways to the Fat Boy, but easily equipped with a wind shield and bags,
Just to humor me, take another look at the FXDWG , they are pretty damn nice.

You've gotten some pretty good advice here. I have a Softail and an Electraglide. I don't know anything about a wobble in the Electraglide. It is a fantastic bike for long trips.
You really need to ask yourself what kind of riding you plan on doing. If you are going to mainly stay in town with a couple of weekend trips the Fat Boy or the Heritage would work fine. I would also second the opinion above about the Dyna. You can get them with the quick release system for saddlebags and sissy bars. If you plan on taking long trips then the Electraglide is the way to go.

Truth be told you can have the best of both worlds and a whole lot more with a BMW R1200RT. But if you absolutely must have a Harley I recommend staying away from any of the softtail models including the fat boy. They have by far the WORST quality suspension setup of the group and the most vibration and hardest ride. The Electra Glide is a far more comfortable and luxurious ride but at over 800 pounds it's an absolute pig and still won't win any awards for it's suspension setup or engine design. To meet in the middle I recommend buying a dyna-glide and having touring accessories such as a windsheild, saddle bags, crash bars, and highway pegs added on at purchase. And to improve the inherent flaws that lie in all of Harley's bargain basement suspension systems you could have fully adjustable showa forks added up front as well as a dual disc braking system to make up for the lack luster braking performance. Even with all of this added it'll still come out cheaper than the fat boy as long as you don't let your dealer beat you over the head and you will have a far superior bike compared to the fat boy plus the knowledge that you had it built to your personal specifications. OR you could just buy the BMW and be done with it =).
