Hi every body
I have a problem that summons attention of all those who really care for the education of our young ones. We very honestly solve different problems of our children on Yahoo answers where every body is free to participate. I have recently found that there was a homework problem of Mathematics given by some student. It was a bit complicated one. I found many solutions in the yahoo answers. Except for two answers, other were either wrong or not serious ones. After a few days I found that a WRONG solution was selected by voters to be the best. I have nothing to say against the people’s verdict. But as a teacher I am really concerned with the fate of Students who consider these solutions to be authentic. Will they not be misguided? I would request all the wise persons who really care for our young generation to come forward with some feasible solution and request Yahoos to consider it.

pram, let me tell you what I am concerned about, which to me is a more serious problem. Homework is meant to be done by the student for him to learn. Yahoo answers has become an outlet for lazy kids to have their homework done so it is not them who are really doing their homework. I would actually feel happy if all the answers given are wrong because the kid should be figuring it out by himself in the first place.
I think that there are some genuinely good questions and some tough ones too and it is nice to see the great input on such questions, but the majority of questions are obviously posted by kids who could not be bothered to put the effort to do their own work.
For example: what maths book does not explain how to find the slope of a line?
If the student had been paying attention in class, I am sure the teacher explained it too. Yet we find kids asking such trivial questions time and time again.

As you can see by one of your answers sometimes this is done deliberately. The other problem is we can all vote for ourselves for Best Answer. In all probability that is why the person was voted as Best. They voted for them self and if they cheat and have more than one account they vote twice for themselves. If the students that ask the question would have the "COMMON COURTESY" to take the time to vote for a BA this could pretty well be avoided. I would venture a guess of 95% that DO NOT pick BA! If you check the percentages on the leaderboards you will see that some have EXTREMELY high best answer percentages which leaves me suspect. I hope this helps you understand part of the problem. It's not just homework help that is the problem. When people are suggesting highly toxic plants to be around their pets it shows complete and utter disrespect for any that actually give correct information. Most people don't seem to pay attention to: "Know your source? List it here:" My granddaughter is a highschool calculus teacher and she has made note of this. PS I have brought this to the forum Home/Forum/Blog/HelpAnswers with no results. Click on the forum upper right hand corner and post this on the suggestion forum.

A self-healing malady.

I agree with one of the answers here that once students realise that the solutions given on Y! A are wrong, they will stop asking others to do their homework for them. If they can't do their homework on their own, they can always research tips to solve their homework questions on the Internet. If they still can't, they should go ask their teachers for help.

Sometimes this problem is due to teachers(sometimes unqualified) who are often overworked and underpaid that they have lost all enthusiasm for teaching. But then a wave of poor grades across the class should alert the school management to the faulty instruction methods employed by the teacher, if they are alert enough. And if they care enough for the future of the students, the school authorities will step in and take remedial action. Teachers should care about the wellbeing and education of their students, not Yahoo!

Due to the sheer volume of questions posted under Homework Help, I personally doubt whether Y! will not be able to regulate Homework Help, as you suggested.

The reason for all this is the federal law NCLB.
This is a federal law that mandates schools to come up higher in their teaching. The schools are 'graded' on how well they teach children. If the school does well, they get more money from the government.

The 'grade' the school gets is determined by all students taking a test once a year. The scores on these tests determine how well the school is teaching the children.

But, instead of the school actually teaching the children, the schools dumb down the curiculum (what they are teaching the children) so the school work will be easier for the children to pass the tests so the schools will GET MORE MONEY.

Teachers can no longer 'teach' children. They now have to spoon feed information that is going to be on these tests all year long. They have to 'memorize' information and do not LEARN anything at all.

This is our future. Children that will grow up and run our country, our world. And they will not how how to solve problems, they will not know HOW to LEARN.

All thanks to the good folks that WE as TAXPAYERS pay the school employees SALARIES.
And they do all THIS to OUR CHILDREN.

As far as yahoo answers having a solution, I don't think they wil have one.

misguided is not used correctly. Misguided is an adjective. You want to say, will the students be led astray? Still, you are doing better with a language that is not your mother tongue than I would do, so congrats, you are quite understandable and also very very polite.

Only place where a kid could be warned by Yahoo Answers would be when the student decides where his question would appear. A caveat could be inserted at that time warning the student that many people give answers, most of the answers are earnestly given but may be erroneous.

Kids are so naive. How kind of you to care enough to post this!

Great question!

I must admit to being VERY tempted to give wrong answers on purpose when students just post their homework for us to do. I've not yet done it, but these kids need to learn that homework is for THEM to do and not us!

Frankly, I'm hoping that YOU are not solving these problems for the kids. If so, you are contributing to the problem. It's always better to give an example or a similar problem.

The bigger problem is NOT the wrong answers -- it is the number of students who are using Y!A to cheat.

I agree with starwhite, I start to think more seriously that there are many lazy students who want their homework done.
I am sad also when I see good answers given thumbed down and those who say all the spoon fed solution are thumbed up.

The writing and grammar of young students is also horrible. Some questions I can't bring myself to answer because of how its written. As for the math, sometimes the wrong answer being chosen is human error. Some may be misguided from the mis-answers, but a decent teacher would hopefully correct them later.

If "young students " post questions like 2+1 =? then they are bound to get cheeky answers.

You are allowed to post comments on that selection and I hope you did and guided people to the two correct answers by name.
