I am from New Zealand and just assumed that everyone had a "boxing day".....that was until I went to the USA on Boxing Day and people looked at me blankly when I said it.

Is it only the Commonwealth countries that have it or have other countries picked up on it as well?

It's an English custom originally and ex-pats are probably in every country in the world by now. We all celebrate Christmas Day & Boxing Day, In Commonwealth countries it's a National Holiday but that doesn't stop ex-pats celebrating wherever they happen to be, it's tradition.

I have friends, in Washington, DC, Virginia, Maryland and California. They all celebrate Boxing day, but they are all ex-pats.

Curious thing though, the shopping malls & plazas have "Boxing Day Sales" even though Boxing Day is not officially observed in the US.
